It took a while, but Keira Knightley has finally revealed the baby name she and husband James Righton picked for their daughter in the current issue of Elle magazine. And the name she kept under wraps? The up-and-coming nickname name Edie.
Edie is commonly considered a short form of Edith, and shares its meaning: prosperous in war. Edith has been on a big uptick over the past few years; it currently ranks in the top 700 here in the U.S., and we can see Edie following in its footsteps, alongside other popular nickname names like Ellie, Evie, Abby, and Millie. Edie’s most popular bearers include Andy Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick and Emmy award-winning actress Edie Falco (of Sopranos and Nurse Jackie fame).
There’s no word on what middle name the couple picked for Edie. I like the idea of James, which has become a celebrity name du jour for girls, with Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds picking it for their daughter, and stars like Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Capshaw, and James Marsden all using it in the middle spot. (And it would pay homage to Dad, too.) It’d also be nice to go with a longer pick, like Clementine, Fiona, or even Keira in honor of Mom.
Tell us: What do you think of Edie? Would you consider it—or its origin name, Edith—for your daughter?
